Universitas Muhammadiyah Surakarta (UMS) has just signed a strategic partnership with the National Research and Innovation Agency (BRIN). The partnership opens up research internship opportunities for UMS students.

Vice Rector V Prof. Supriyono, S.T., M.T., Ph.D., explained that the research internship is open to UMS students interested in scientific fields. Students will also get the chance to take part in joint research with BRIN.

"Usually, an internship means an industry internship, but this one is a research internship. Students who want to become scientists can take advantage of this program. They may even be able to work on a specific research project for their final thesis," Supriyono said, when interviewed on Thursday (1/10/2026).

Supriyono hopes many UMS students will make use of this opportunity to support their academic development and build networks with BRIN's leading researchers.

"We're going to run a socialization campaign soon, and then we'll encourage students to make the most of this opportunity," he added.

Besides the research internship, this strategic partnership also opens up the chance for UMS lecturers and students to bring in BRIN researchers as thesis or dissertation advisors.

According to Dr. Sidiq Permono Nugroho, S.E., M.M., Head of the Industry Partnership Development Subdivision at UMS's Directorate of Reputation, Partnership, and International Affairs, this step opens up access for UMS to collaborate with a wide range of cross-disciplinary experts under BRIN.

"BRIN is rich in resources and specific expertise. Especially since BRIN is actually a merger of several institutions, like LIPI, LAPAN, and BATAN," Sidiq said.

Sidiq explained that this partnership also opens up opportunities for research collaboration with UMS's own research centers. Research centers with specific research focuses will be proposed for collaboration with BRIN going forward.

The partnership, signed in Jakarta, Tuesday (29/9/2026), is now entering the stage of internal discussion at UMS. Sidiq said his team is currently working out the details of the internship program, from timing and duration to the internship paperwork process.

For this initial stage, the research internship program will be open to students in the STEM fields (science, technology, engineering, and mathematics). That said, Sidiq didn't rule out students in the social sciences and humanities getting the same opportunity down the line.

Asked about when the research internship would actually take place, Sidiq said, "What we're planning is for it to run during the semester break."
