On a rainy January day, we met with Muhammad Abuzar, a Pakistani student pursuing his master’s degree in Psychology at Universitas Muhammadiyah Surakarta. Despite having just completed his semester exams, his face radiated happiness as he eagerly welcomed our interview, ready to share his journey at UMS.
Hailing from Pakistan with a background in psychology, Abuzar was actively engaged in the Concentration Movement, a youth-driven initiative focusing on self-improvement. His influence extended through regular lectures on mental health, showcasing his commitment to making a positive impact.
It was natural for Abuzar to aspire to reach greater heights. His gaze was set on contributing on a global scale. Driven by his passion for psychology and a desire to broaden his horizons, Abuzar embarked on a quest to find a university that aligned with his aspirations.
His search for a university led him to Universitas Muhammadiyah Surakarta. Abuzar explained that his decision to study at UMS was influenced by the university’s outstanding academic credentials, particularly in the Faculty of Psychology. This, combined with highly educated lecturers with international backgrounds, made UMS stand out. UMS dedication to research and collaboration with various countries resonated with his vision of a globally-oriented academic environment.
Abuzar, when asked about his decision to choose UMS, expressed. “When I was looking for a scholarship, I found UMS, and when I checked the Faculty of Psychology, I was impressed by the qualifications of the lecturers and the quality of the research papers.” Abuzar shared in the interview.
Beyond Paper and Pen
UMS impact goes beyond academics, Abuzar highlighted the university’s holistic approach on education, the emphasis on developing soft skills and its commitment to global exposure. For him, UMS is not just a place to study, it is a platform to strengthen his communication skills, confidence, and personal development.
“I chose UMS because I thought that I’m not going there just for studies,” Abuzar said. “I could have studied in my country. However, I believe that UMS is the platform to improve my skills and not just books or studies. It enhances my communication skills. Thanks to UMS, I have the opportunity to interact with the international community.”
Abuzar mentioned that many people are intelligent and talented, with the potential to attend college in Europe or America. However, due to financial constraints, many have to abandon such opportunities. Abuzar expressed gratitude for UMS International Priority Scholarship (IPS) that eased financial worries, he mentioned how this support was crucial in turning his dream of studying abroad into a reality. The university’s dedication to creating a welcoming environment for international students is evident not only through the IPS but also in the comfortable living conditions they offer “The place where I stay (Pesma) is perfect because even though the outside is hot, the indoor area is very cool. Sometimes, you don’t need to turn on the fan to cool yourself.”
Looking ahead Abuzar plans to pursue a PhD, especially in neuroscience or neuropsychology, and his ultimate goal remains clear, establishing a research center in Pakistan, a beacon for aspiring minds all over the globe to explore the frontier of psychology and neuroscience. He believes that UMS provides him with the skills and knowledge to make this dream a reality.
"I want to develop a research center that will intrigue researchers from all over the world," he declares, his voice full of confidence. "It's my aim, and UMS is helping me get there."
Heart of Java
Abuzar’s journey hasn’t been without challenges. Coming alone to a new country with a different language could have been daunting. But the friendliness of the Indonesian people, especially the people of Solo, quickly dispelled his worries. “Solo is the heart of Java, the people here are amazing,” he exclaimed. “They are so friendly, so polite, and always willing to help.”
He shared tips to overcome loneliness in another country. “Go and make friends with other international students. I talked with them. I shared my things with them. They shared their things with me. And with it, I overcome the obstacles of loneliness.”
Two years in Solo has made him develop a taste for local cuisine, rendang and tempe are the spotlight of Abuzar’s culinary delight. Tempe especially was confounding him, he was amused to learn that tempe is made from fermented soybean. “Tempe is love. I didn’t know tempe, I was afraid to try it, but once I tried it, oh my God. Then I searched on Google, and I found that it’s very nutritious.” He said with excitement.
The Pakistani student also enjoyed spending time in Tawangmangu for its natural beauty and Mangkunegaran for its rich history. “Solo is very pure. If you talk about history, I've been to Mangkunegaran. It gave me a sense of wonder, a wonderful experience,” Abuzar said.
A Leap of Faith
When asked about whether international students should study at UMS, Abuzar’s message is clear. “Come here. I guarantee you will not be disappointed. Solo is a safe place, full of friendly people and endless opportunities. UMS will not just give you an education, it will give you the platform to launch your dreams.”
Abuzar’s story is not just about one student’s journey, it’s a proof of the power of education that transcends borders. It's a story about finding a home away from home, about friendships that cross continents, and about dreams that have the power to illuminate entire nations.
