Deskripsi
Discourse Analysis is an interdisciplinary course designed to broaden students’ perspectives in examining and interpreting language use from linguistic, social, cultural, and ideological viewpoints. The course introduces students to key theories and approaches in discourse analysis, including the study of context, text types, pragmatics, critical discourse analysis, and the relationship between language, power, and society.
Through systematic exploration of spoken and written texts, students engage in processes of interpreting, constructing, relating, organizing, and negotiating meaning for communicative purposes. Emphasis is placed on understanding language in use, where meaning is shaped not only by linguistic structures but also by situational, cultural, historical, and ideological contexts. Students are trained to critically analyze various discourse types, including literary texts, academic texts, media discourse, and everyday communication.
The course integrates AIK (Al-Islam dan Kemuhammadiyahan) values by encouraging ethical, responsible, and value-oriented language use. Students are guided to analyze discourse from an Islamic ethical perspective, emphasizing honesty, justice, inclusivity, respect, and social responsibility in communication. In line with Muhammadiyah’s commitment to enlightenment (pencerahan) and progressive thought, students are encouraged to develop critical awareness toward discourse that shapes social realities, including issues of inequality, misinformation, and moral degradation.
By the end of the course, students are expected to:
-
Demonstrate a comprehensive understanding of discourse analysis theories and concepts.
-
Conduct context-sensitive discourse analysis across various genres and communicative settings.
-
Produce coherent and contextually appropriate discourse in both oral and written forms.
-
Apply Islamic ethical principles in interpreting and producing discourse.
-
Develop critical and reflective thinking aligned with Muhammadiyah’s values of intellectualism, integrity, and social contribution.
Through this integrative approach, the course aims not only to enhance students’ academic competence but also to foster morally grounded, socially responsible, and critically aware language users.
