Digital Journalism for Non-Journalism Students is a comprehensive 2-credit course designed to introduce students from diverse academic backgrounds to the dynamic and rapidly evolving landscape of digital media and journalism. The course equips students with both conceptual understanding and practical competencies necessary to navigate, analyze, and contribute responsibly to the digital information environment.

The course explores the fundamental principles of digital journalism, including the transformation of news production and distribution through digital technologies, the role of social media platforms, ethical and legal considerations, digital storytelling techniques, audience engagement strategies, and emerging innovations such as artificial intelligence and mobile journalism. Students examine how digital platforms shape public discourse, influence societal perceptions, and redefine communication practices in contemporary society.

Through a combination of lectures, case studies, hands-on projects, collaborative activities, and reflective discussions, students develop practical skills in utilizing digital tools and platforms, conducting research and fact-checking, producing multimedia content, and simulating digital newsroom workflows. Emphasis is placed on critical thinking, media literacy, responsible communication, and the ability to adapt to technological advancements.

This course integrates AIK (Al-Islam and Kemuhammadiyahan) values by promoting ethical awareness, integrity, and social responsibility in digital communication. Students are encouraged to critically evaluate digital content through Islamic moral principles such as honesty (amanah), justice (‘adl), accountability (mas’uliyyah), and respect (akhlaq al-karimah). In alignment with Muhammadiyah’s vision of progressive and enlightened society (masyarakat berkemajuan), the course fosters critical engagement with issues such as misinformation, hate speech, digital polarization, and the ethical use of artificial intelligence in journalism.

By the end of the course, students will be able to:

  1. Demonstrate an understanding of the structure and dynamics of digital journalism.

  2. Critically analyze digital news content and its social implications.

  3. Produce responsible, ethical, and engaging digital media content.

  4. Apply Islamic ethical principles in evaluating and creating digital communication.

  5. Adapt to emerging trends and technologies while maintaining professional integrity and social contribution.

Through this integrative approach, the course aims not only to build digital journalism competence but also to cultivate morally grounded, critically aware, and socially responsible communicators who contribute positively to the digital public sphere.
