On Thursday, April 14, 2022, TATV TV Station’s “UMS Menyapa” program featured a live interview with representatives from the Faculty of Engineering at UMS. The interview included the Dean of the Faculty of Engineering, Rois Fatoni, S.T., M.Sc., Ph.D., Vice Dean I for Academic Affairs, Mochammad Soliki, S.T., M.T., Ph.D., and Vice Dean III for Student Affairs, Dr. Indah Pratiwi, S.T., M.T., The theme of this edition was “The Role of the Faculty of Engineering at UMS in Achieving SDGs (Sustainable Development Goals).”
In his interview, the Dean of the Faculty of Engineering stated the commitment of the UMS Faculty of Engineering to realize the Sustainable Development Goals, especially in providing quality, inclusive, and lifelong education. Quality education is related to human resources and educational facilities. According to the Dean of the Faculty of Engineering UMS, there are 139 lecturers at the Faculty of Engineering UMS, most of whom are studying abroad. This is a manifestation of quality engineering education by providing quality teaching staff (lecturers), so students have a “global engineering, global citizen” mindset.
The Faculty of Engineering UMS strives to provide a quality education that can be reached by all communities, both upper and lower middle class. Faculty of Engineering lecturers who have studied abroad are also committed to providing quality content or material modules that meet international standards. The Faculty of Engineering has 10 study programs, 6 S-1 study programs (Architecture, Mechanical Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Civil Engineering, Industrial Engineering), and 5 S-1 study programs are accredited excellent. For Postgraduate study programs, there are 3 study programs, namely Master of Civil Engineering, Master of Mechanical Engineering, and Master of Chemical Engineering, where the Master of Civil Engineering is accredited excellent. Finally, there is a Professional Engineer Program for Engineering Students who want to have a career as a professional engineer. In 2025, the Faculty of Engineering targets 6 internationally certified study programs.
Vice Dean I for Academic Affairs, Mr. Mochammad Solikin, S.T., M.T., Ph.D., explained that the education system at FT UMS incorporates several aspects of the 17 SDGs. Specifically, it ensures decent employment and fosters innovation to build resilient infrastructure.
The Faculty of Engineering also emphasizes student collaboration, offers internationally standardized knowledge, and facilitates practical activities that enhance students’ motor skills with access to sophisticated lab facilities. Additionally, the faculty operates inbound and outbound student programs, enabling students to study abroad for one semester or pursue double degrees. Conversely, the Faculty of Engineering UMS welcomes students from abroad, including those from Malaysia, Africa, and other regions.
Moreover, the Faculty of Engineering provides opportunities for students to participate in the MBKM (Merdeka Belajar Kampus Merdeka) program, where they engage in internships or entrepreneurship activities for one semester or six months. This initiative aims to equip students with a comprehensive CV upon graduation.
Dr. Indah Pratiwi, S.T., M.T., the Vice Dean III for Student Affairs, elaborated on various aspects of student affairs during this occasion. She discussed student organizations (ORMAWA) within the FT UMS, such as BEM FT and student families like KMTM for Mechanical Engineering. Additionally, the Faculty of Engineering offers soft skill development opportunities through initiatives like the Student Nature Lovers (DINAMIK) and sports activities (SONIC). In addition, the Faculty of Engineering hosts several communities, including the energy-efficient car community and the robotics community, to hone students’ skills and prepare them to participate in national and international competitions.
The Vice Dean III for Student Affairs encourages students to actively engage in academic and non-academic competition activities. This involvement allows students to explore their potential and talents fully.
In his final remarks, the speaker urged the community to support the Faculty of Engineering UMS, emphasizing that their assistance is vital for ensuring that the ideas and products from the faculty are beneficial and contribute meaningfully to the broader community.
