A team from the Faculty of Pharmacy, Universitas Muhammadiyah Surakarta (UMS), once again carved an impressive milestone by winning a gold medal in the international science and innovation competition, the 7th International Science and Invention Fair (ISIF) 2025.
ISIF is a competition initiated by the Indonesian Young Scientist Association (IYSA), serving as an international platform that brings together 956 teams of young innovators from 27 countries. The competition is divided into seven sub-themes, with 522 teams participating online and 434 teams competing offline in Bali.
The team from UMS, named Nansyi, consists of five students: Dani Hendrawan, Jelyza Wida Azizah, Salsabila Rizki Iriyanti, Syahbana Najwa Prayoga, and Nanda Fadhilah.
Team leader Dani Hendrawan explained that the innovation they developed is titled “Characterization and Evaluation of a Nanoemulsion Delivery System of Tea Mistletoe (Scurrula atropurpurea) Ethanol Extract as an Oral Anti-inflammatory Agent.”
This innovation focuses on developing a nanoemulsion drug delivery system to address inflammation in the body, offering an oral anti-inflammatory solution derived from natural tea mistletoe extract.
“The use of nanoemulsion technology aims to enhance the absorption effectiveness of active compounds while minimizing the risk of side effects commonly associated with conventional nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs),” Dani said when contacted on Friday (21/11/2025).

The idea for developing this anti-inflammatory formulation began with the existing anti-inflammatory drugs on the market, which, according to him, may cause problems if consumed over a long period. These issues include gastrointestinal irritation as well as disturbances in the circulatory or cardiovascular system.
Dani explained that formulating the product did not go smoothly at first. It took three trials to achieve the right and effective combination of ingredients. Fortunately, their hard work paid off when they succeeded in bringing home the gold medal at ISIF 2025 in Bali.
The supervising lecturer for the Nansyi Team, Suprapto, S.Si., Apt., M.Sc., expressed his pride in this achievement. He is optimistic that the team’s accomplishment will inspire other UMS students and further reinforce UMS's position as an innovative university.
“Alhamdulillah, this victory reaffirms UMS’s position as an institution that is active in innovation and globally competitive,” said Suprapto.
Suprapto stated that this achievement is not only a source of pride for the Faculty of Pharmacy and UMS, but also places Indonesia at the forefront of global innovation. He hopes that the nanoemulsion innovation using tea mistletoe extract can soon be followed up toward downstream development so its benefits can be directly felt by the wider community.
“This accomplishment serves as an inspiration for the entire UMS academic community to continue achieving and contributing meaningfully to scientific advancement and the welfare of society,” he said.
