In line with the rapidly accelerating advancement of technology, the Informatics Engineering Education (PTI) Study Program at Universitas Muhammadiyah Surakarta (UMS) held a Public Lecture titled “Artificial Intelligence and Programming Skills for 21st-Century Competencies.” The event took place in the Seminar Room of the Edutorium K.H. Ahmad Dahlan UMS.

The public lecture was organized as PTI UMS’s effort to enhance and expand students’ knowledge in responding to the increasingly swift development of information technology.

The Head of the Informatics Engineering Education Program UMS, Sukirman, Ph.D., stated the purpose behind holding the lecture. “This Public Lecture is organized as a program effort to keep up with the dynamic development of technology,” he said, Monday (2/12/2025).

Meanwhile, the Vice Dean IV of the Faculty of Teacher Training and Education (FKIP) UMS, Dr. Nur Subekti S.Pd., M.Or., stated that PTI is one of FKIP’s leading study programs. “PTI is a flagship program at FKIP. Its scientific discipline is always relevant to the development of education in Indonesia, especially in educational technology and learning,” Subekti explained.

This public lecture invited the Director of Information Technology at Universitas Gadjah Mada, Prof. Dr. Ir. Ridi Ferdiana, S.T., M.T., IPM., as the guest speaker. Opening his presentation, Ridi emphasized that artificial intelligence (AI) will be a beneficial technology if used properly.

“AI is an advanced technology with enormous benefits when used correctly and appropriately,” he said.

According to Ridi, AI can help improve guided learning processes, enhance creativity in teaching, and expand access to education that can be widely enjoyed.

Ridi then raised the issue regarding the future of the workforce in the era of technological intelligence.

“Universities and schools are essentially educating their students to understand jobs that do not yet exist today, such as those shaped by an AI-driven future, programming skills, problem-solving, and technological adaptation. This is part of the effort to support the continuity of their careers in the future,” he explained.

The material presented in the public lecture held on Tuesday (25/11/2025) was aligned with the graduate profile of PTI UMS, who are projected to become educators in the field of informatics. It is hoped that, with the advancement of technology and AI intelligence, PTI graduates will not only be capable of mastering technology use, but also able to guide the public in using AI wisely.
