Universitas Muhammadiyah Surakarta (UMS) hosted the MPR RI Goes to Campus event themed "The Urgency of Energy Transition in Preventing the Impact of Climate Change" on Tuesday (28/4/2026).
The event was held at the Dr. H. Syamsudin Seminar Room on the 8th floor of the Ahmad Syafii Maarif Building, Faculty of Economics and Business (FEB), UMS, and featured Deputy Speaker of the People's Consultative Assembly (MPR RI), Dr. Eddy Soeparno, S.H., M.H., as the keynote speaker.
The event was attended by more than 700 students from various study programs across UMS, particularly from the Faculty of Economics and Business, all of whom were visibly enthusiastic from start to finish.
UMS Rector Prof. Dr. Harun Joko Prayitno, M.Hum. delivered a lively and interactive opening address that drew enthusiastic cheers from the audience. He invited students from programs including management, accounting, development economics, and digital business to participate actively in the national lecture.
"The presence of the Deputy Speaker of the MPR RI is a valuable opportunity for you to learn directly from an experienced national practitioner in the fields of legislation and public policy," he said.
He noted that the theme of energy is particularly relevant given its strategic role in development, as well as its potential to trigger conflict if not managed well.
He also emphasized the importance of shifting cultural attitudes toward energy use, including avoiding wasteful habits in daily life as part of a broader commitment to sustainability.
Through this event, he added, UMS hopes to build stronger synergy between the academic world and state institutions in addressing the challenges of climate change and energy management in the years ahead.
In his presentation, Eddy Soeparno affirmed that the climate crisis is a global reality that can no longer be ignored and demands immediate action.
"Indonesia's renewable energy potential is enormous, yet it remains far from fully utilized. A well-planned energy transition is therefore necessary to safeguard national energy security," Eddy said.
He also drew attention to an energy paradox facing Indonesia: the country is rich in energy resources, yet still depends on imports to meet certain needs.
