As an initial step toward revitalizing the pesantren economy, Pondok Hajjah Nuriyah Shabran at Universitas Muhammadiyah Surakarta (UMS) held its first Public Lecture themed “Santripreneur and Community Independence: Building an Entrepreneurial Spirit Based on Islamic Values.” The lecture took place in the Seminar Room, Graduate School Building, 5th floor, Campus 2, on Saturday (29/11/2025).
The theme aligns with the leadership priorities of Yayuli, S.Ag., M.P.I., Head of Pondok Shabran UMS, who emphasizes strengthening the pesantren’s economic empowerment alongside its community dakwah activities.
In his remarks, the Secretary of Pondok Shabran UMS, Muk Andhim, S.Pd., M.Pd., explained that this lecture serves as an initial step for mahasantri, not only to grasp basic entrepreneurial concepts, but also to understand entrepreneurship infused with skills and the character of honesty, piety, and responsibility.
“Here at Pondok Shabran, we believe that entrepreneurship is not merely about profit. More than that, it is a moral responsibility,” he stated, Sunday (30/11/2025).
This implicitly shows that Pondok Shabran seeks to cultivate santri with integrity and noble conduct in business.
Andhim also revealed that all santri will be directly involved in the various business units managed by the pondok.
“Every mahasantri will be scheduled for entrepreneurship training. After that, we will also strengthen and develop Shabran Bakery, starting from its managerial aspects to its marketing,” he added.
Not stopping there, in the areas of agriculture, livestock, and land management, Pondok Shabran UMS will rebuild Shabran Farm as a place that nurtures the mahasantri’s interest in farming and gardening.
In doing so, Shabran Farm will serve as a space to cultivate food independence as well as agribusiness and agriculture-based entrepreneurial skills.
K.H. Anang Rikza Masyhadi, M.A., Ph.D., as the guest speaker, explained several philosophical reasons regarding the importance of business for the Muslim community, particularly in fulfilling the pillars of Islam, especially zakat and hajj.
“If you want to fulfill all five pillars of Islam perfectly, what you must have is wealth,” he said.

In his explanation, he used the concept of “Good to Great,” which illustrates how an ordinary organization can grow into an exceptional one. Its main keys are personal discipline, disciplined thinking, and disciplined action.
“All the events ran smoothly. We hope that through this public lecture, we can cultivate santripreneurs with integrity and a proper understanding of entrepreneurship from an Islamic perspective, so that pesantren can become centers that drive an Islamic-character economy,” he emphasized.
The mahasantri were highly enthusiastic about the material presented. This was evident from the questions they asked, the opinions they shared, and even their requests for tips and advice on how to stay motivated when starting a business.
