Climate Action Policy

The institution adopts a comprehensive Green Campus policy that integrates environmental protection, sustainability, and climate change mitigation into its strategic planning and daily operations. This includes the development of a strategic plan aligned with environmental management principles, the establishment of dedicated teams and programs to promote environmental awareness, and the implementation of a Climate Action Plan aimed at reducing carbon emissions, improving energy efficiency, and fostering a sustainable campus environment. Operational strategies focus on optimizing infrastructure and spatial planning, enhancing energy conservation and renewable energy use, managing waste through reduction, segregation, and safe treatment, conserving water resources, and promoting environmentally friendly transportation systems. Additionally, the institution emphasizes increasing green open spaces, adopting eco-friendly building practices, and ensuring active participation from all academic members through continuous monitoring, evaluation, and institutional accountability mechanisms to mitigate environmental impact effectively.

Dedicated Training on Environmental Aspects

Smart class usability training supports sustainable education practices by strengthening the capacity of staff to implement Smartclass-based digital learning, enabling more efficient, paperless teaching and reducing reliance on physical resources. By integrating interactive technologies into classroom delivery, the initiative contributes to minimizing material consumption and limiting the need for physical mobility, thereby aligning with institutional efforts to promote environmentally responsible and low-carbon educational practices. SmartClass Usage Training

Sustainable Purchasing Policy

As part of its commitment to sustainable and environmentally responsible procurement practices, Universitas Muhammadiyah Surakarta has integrated the principles of environmentally responsible purchasing into its Green Campus policy. This policy encompasses provisions related to material use, procurement standards, and environmentally sound waste management. These commitments are reflected in Article 4 paragraph (1) point d, which addresses material resources and includes policies on procurement and purchasing as well as waste management, and are further reinforced in Article 3 paragraph (6), which outlines systematic and sustainable waste management practices.

Sustainable Investment Policy

Investment decisions prioritize projects and assets that support energy efficiency, renewable energy utilization, sustainable infrastructure development, and environmentally friendly technologies, in line with the strategic planning and environmental management principles. Furthermore, all investments must consider environmental impact, resource efficiency, and long-term sustainability value, ensuring consistency with the green building standards and resource management.

Greenhouse Gas (GHG) Protocol Corporate Standard

Universitas Muhammadiyah Surakarta reports its carbon emissions in alignment with the Greenhouse Gas (GHG) Protocol Corporate Standard, a widely recognized international framework for greenhouse gas accounting. The university’s carbon emission reporting follows this standard by categorizing emissions into Scope 1 (direct emissions), Scope 2 (indirect emissions from purchased electricity), and Scope 3 (other indirect emissions, currently limited to waste), ensuring consistency, transparency, and comparability with global sustainability reporting practices.

Net Zero Carbon Emission

The University has publicly committed to progressing toward net-zero carbon emissions 2050 as part of its broader sustainability agenda and environmental responsibility. This commitment is reflected in its institutional carbon accounting and reporting practices, which are aligned with the Greenhouse Gas (GHG) Protocol Corporate Standard, and in the establishment of a 2023 baseline for emissions measurement. The University is actively implementing strategies to reduce emissions, including improving energy efficiency, expanding the use of renewable energy such as solar power, and strengthening environmental governance and data systems. Future plans also include expanding Scope 3 emissions coverage and enhancing sustainable campus operations, demonstrating a clear pathway toward long-term carbon neutrality and continuous improvement in sustainability performance.
