Towards a World Class University

In its commitment to elevate Universitas Muhammadiyah Surakarta (UMS) towards becoming a World-Class University, the university’s Center of Language and General Science (LBIPU) has introduced the English for Lecturers program. This program offers English language courses tailored for faculty members, focusing on preparing them for IELTS and TOEFL exams.

This initiative aims not only to improve lecturers' English proficiency but also to broaden their professional networks, enabling opportunities such as lecturer exchanges, research collaborations with partner universities, and participation in international conferences.

Dr. Abdillah Nugroho, M.Hum., Head of Language Services Development at LBIPU UMS, explained that the English for Lecturers program was launched with a specific objective. “This program is designed to improve lecturers' communication and verbal skills, particularly as many UMS classes are international and require lecturers to deliver material in English. We want to ensure that each lecturer is well-prepared to teach effectively in a global context,” he said.

Abdillah added that the English for Lecturers program, currently aimed at lecturers, will be expanded to university staff in the future.

“We plan to offer this opportunity to university staffs as well, as English proficiency is crucial for all university members,” he noted.

Program Structure and Curriculum

Notably, the English for Lecturers program is completely free, making it a valuable development resource for lecturers and staff. The course is scheduled for ten in-person sessions per batch at LBIPU UMS Lab on Campus 1.

“We want all lecturers to have the opportunity to enhance their language skills without any financial burden. It’s a development course aimed at encouraging all lecturers to participate enthusiastically,” Abdillah explained.

The curriculum follows IELTS and TOEFL standards, integrating theory, practice, and exams. The teaching materials ensure participants gain a comprehensive and practical learning experience.

The program is entirely managed by LBIPU UMS, consisting of experienced instructors with strong backgrounds in English. These instructors have achieved minimum 7 IELTS scores, and have studied abroad.

According to Abdillah, the program also provides free books and teaching materials for participants.

“We supply materials created by a dedicated LBIPU UMS team, ensuring participants have clear guidance during and after the course," he said thoughtfully

Since its launch in 2023, the English for Lecturers program runs annually with four batches, each with a maximum of 15 participants.

“Over nearly two years, we’ve received great feedback from lecturers who are highly enthusiastic and see the tangible benefits of the program,” Abdillah shared.

Reflecting on this feedback, LBIPU UMS remains committed to refining and developing the program to align with lecturers' needs and the demands of education.

“Participants are very enthusiastic. Many have expressed feeling more confident in international classes and even plan to pursue doctoral studies abroad,” he added.

For lecturers aiming to pursue doctoral studies, where IELTS and TOEFL are often required, this program is particularly valuable.

With initiatives like the English for Lecturers program, UMS demonstrates its dedication to advancing the quality of education and teaching. This step aligns with UMS vision to compete globally and become a world-class university that excels in education and research.

Abdillah concluded, “We believe that lecturers who can communicate in English will have greater opportunities to collaborate with international academics, strengthening UMS  position globally.”
