Nurses are highly needed in the medical field, especially in caring for patients during recovery. They provide support and services to facilitate healing. Generally, nurses pursue specialized nursing education. Let’s take a closer look at this field of study.
Nursing Science
Nursing is a service centered on individuals, groups, and communities, whether in conditions of health or illness.
Head of the Nursing Department at Universitas Muhammadiyah Surakarta (UMS), Irdawati, S.Kep, Ns., M.Si.Med., explained that nursing science is the study of holistic nursing care addressing human problems.
The goal of nursing science is to assist individuals, families, and communities, whether healthy or ill, in achieving optimal health.
“Nursing and nursing science are interconnected and not only about treating diseases, but also about caring for the whole person, including emotional, mental, psychological, and social aspects,” said Irdawati on Wednesday (3/9/2025).
Bachelor of Nursing
At UMS, the Nursing Department focuses on preparing future nurses with strong clinical competence, supported by mental, spiritual, and ethical resilience. The goal is to equip graduates to compete in the field of nursing and other healthcare professions.
Irdawati explained that Nursing at UMS offers an educational program combining modern scientific knowledge with Islamic and humanitarian values. Students are expected to become caring and professional nurses.
“UMS Nursing integrates theory and practice holistically, emphasizes strong ethics, and develops nursing skills. The aim is to shape nurses who can empathize, sympathize, work well in teams, and communicate effectively,” she continued.
The Nursing undergraduate program takes 4 years (8 semesters) to complete. Graduates earn the degree Bachelor of Nursing (S.Kep.).
A Bachelor of Nursing graduate may continue to the professional nursing program, which lasts 1 year (2 semesters). This stage focuses on clinical practice in hospitals or other healthcare facilities.
Nursing Curriculum
At the UMS Nursing Department, students learn professional nursing services with a curriculum designed to deepen patient care skills and effective communication.
Students study education, management, and holistic nursing care, covering treatment for patients with conditions such as diabetes, hypertension, and heart disease. They are supported by expert lecturers and specialists in the nursing field.
Some of the areas covered in UMS Nursing include: maternal, psychiatric, medical-surgical, pediatric, Islamic, family, and emergency nursing
Students also gain direct practice experience, ranging from critical care practice, community nursing practice, to home care practice.
Nursing Career Opportunities
Graduates of Nursing can pursue careers such as:
- Nurse
- Medical and Health Service Manager
- Clinical Research Coordinator
- Civil Servant
Irdawati emphasized that Nursing students must master both theoretical and clinical competencies, including nursing care, documentation of procedures, patient and family education, and support, as well as performing medical procedures.
“Effective communication is also essential to build mutual trust with patients. Equally important is implementing nursing based on evidence-based practice,” she stressed.
