To combat the spread of hoaxes and online gambling, a research team from Universitas Muhammadiyah Surakarta (UMS), funded by the Directorate of Research, Technology, and Community Service (DRTPM), conducted a virtual reality (VR) development trial in Cipaku Village, Purbalingga.
The project received a DRTPM research grant from the Ministry of Education, Culture, Research, and Technology (Kemendikbudristek) in 2024. The research focuses on the topic “Virtual Reality - Behavior Simulations (VRBS) in the Context of Hoax and Gambling Prevention.”
Hardika Dwi Hermawan, S.Pd., M.Sc.ITE., one of the team members, explained that the trials involved users testing the virtual reality technology developed for hoax prevention and combating online gambling.
“This is something very new for the residents of PKBM Cakra, as it’s their first time experiencing virtual reality technology first hand. Initially, we explained how the technology works, followed by a session using VR. In the simulation, they experienced the consequences of online gambling, such as facing a religious court, being imprisoned, and more,” said Hardika Dwi Hermawan, a lecturer from the UMS Informatics Engineering Education department, on Wednesday (9/10/2024).

Through the VR simulation, users are made to experience the serious consequences of spreading hoaxes and engaging in online gambling, creating a sense of concern about how these practices can ruin lives. The simulation also promotes legal awareness, particularly emphasizing the prohibition of illegal online gambling.
"After experiencing this technology, they learn how to control themselves, avoid spreading hoaxes, and steer clear of online gambling, as there are legal consequences," he added.
The PTI UMS lecturer believes that this activity is highly effective in educating the public. “It increases moral imagination, encouraging people to be more cautious when using digital media,” he noted.
This DRTPM grant activity is a continuation of the UMS Association / AUM / Assisted Villages Community Service (P2AD) program. The research team includes Nurgiyatna, Ph.D. (FKI UMS); Dr. Hernawan (FKIP UMS); Hardika Dwi Hermawan, M.Sc.ITE. (FKIP UMS); Ari Septian (FKIP UMS); Nauviana Pita Rosa (FKIP UMS); Arya Veda Setiyandito (FKIP UMS); Rike Nirsafitri (FKIP UMS); and Syahrul Hilbram Julanar (FKI UMS).
“Going forward, this initiative will also be integrated into community service, as research findings indicate that the Cipaku community lacks sufficient education about hoaxes and online gambling. They need various programs that introduce innovations or media to help them become more aware of these harmful practices,” concluded Hardika.
