Two students from the Al-Qur’an and Tafsir Studies (IQT) of Universitas Muhammadiyah Surakarta (UMS), Asmahan Hasna Khoirunnisa and Asda Amatullah, earned a bronze medal at the International Student Summit (ISS) 2025 held in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, on 18–19 October 2025.

Asmahan explained that this international-level competition was organized by the Sentosa Foundation in collaboration with Universiti Sains Islam Malaysia (USIM) and the World Association of Young Scientists (WAYS). This year, ISS was attended by 162 participants from various countries, including Indonesia, Malaysia, Singapore, China, Myanmar, and Timor Leste.

“ISS 2025 carried the theme ‘Empowering Change: Creative Ideas and Sustainable Solutions for Global Challenges’ with eight subthemes, Agriculture, Environment, Health, Food, Education, Law and Economics, Technology, and Tourism and Culture,” explained Asmahan on Wednesday (22/10/2025).

Asda and Asmahan participated in the Economics and Law subtheme with their project titled “Buy Less, Live More: Rediscovering Purpose Through Responsible Consumption.” Their work emphasizes the importance of responsible consumption awareness as a means to foster a sustainable economy amid global challenges.

“ISS 2025 itself aims to provide a platform for international students to share ideas, research findings, and creative innovations in addressing global social and scientific challenges. Beyond being a competition, the event also serves to strengthen academic networks and cross-country collaboration,” she added.

The series of activities began on 17 October 2025 with participant registration at Signature International Hotel @Chinatown, Kuala Lumpur. The event continued with the official opening, poster exhibition, presentations, project evaluations, and award ceremony on 18 October 2025. The program concluded on 19 October 2025 with a field trip to several of Malaysia’s iconic destinations, such as Putrajaya Mosque, KLCC, Dataran Merdeka, and Pasar Seni

Asmahan and Asda’s achievement stands as proof of UMS students’ contribution to international forums and is expected to inspire the younger generation to keep innovating and making a positive impact on the global community.
