The Master of Law (MIH) Study Program from the Faculty of Law (FH) at Universitas Muhammadiyah Surakarta (UMS) conducted a community service in Ngawi Regency on January 14-15, 2023. The event occurred at the Muhammadiyah Da’wah Building and SD Muhammadiyah 1 Ngawi. The community service program titled “Formation of the Ngawi PDNA Paralegal Team in Providing Protection and Fulfillment of Community Legal Rights.”

Collaborating with PDNA Ngawi, MIH UMS organized a counseling session on establishing a paralegal team for mothers, primarily teachers and students in East Java.

The community service initiative has been ongoing since December of last year. It comprises three stages: Stage 1 (December 2022): MIH UMS organized a gathering with PDNA Ngawi Regency. Stage 2 (January 14-15, 2023): A counseling session on forming a paralegal team was held. Stage 3 (Ongoing): The paralegal team is being trained and equipped to provide legal aid to the community.

Head of the Women’s Empowerment, Child Protection and Family Planning Office (DP3KB), Dr. Nugrahaningrum, said that the Ngawi Regent appreciated the community service with the paralegal training scheme. Considering that the number of violence against women and children in Ngawi Regency has increased sharply.

According to the Regent of Ngawi, Nugrahaningrum, one of the factors contributing to the rise in violence is the lack of widespread education about the legal repercussions of actions taken by the community. She expressed her hope for a collaboration between the Ngawi Regency Government and UMS to implement legal literacy education programs for the community in Ngawi Regency.

Prof. Dr. Aidul Fitriciada Azhari, S.H., and M.Hum, who participated in the activity, hope to foster legal awareness in the community.

“This community service activity highlighted the crucial role of paralegal training in addressing the unmet legal needs of underprivileged communities. The prevalence of underprivileged individuals, special needs populations, legal illiteracy, confusion, and even obstacles in accessing justice underscores the importance of paralegals in providing legal assistance and guidance to these communities.” said Aidul Fitriciada Azhari on Friday (6/9)

“The event featured six presenters, including three FH UMS lecturers: Prof. Dr. Aidul Fitriciada Azhari, S.H., M.Hum., Dr. Muchamad Iksan, S.H., M.H., and Marisa Kurnianingsih, S.H., M.H., M.Kn. The remaining three presenters were FH UMS alumni: Syahrial (LPSK Representative), Rizal (Advocate), and Alfan Dzikria (Advocate).”
