One such effort comes from the Informatics Engineering Education (PTI) Program, which is committed to enhancing the knowledge and experience of its teaching staff. This includes delegating PTI UMS lecturers to participate in international workshops.
Recently, UMS PTI Lecturer, Irma Yuliana, S.T., M.Kom., took part in an international workshop titled "Capacity-Building on AI and Digital Transformation in Education for ASEAN TVET Teachers and Educators" at Cheju Halla University, South Korea, from March 23–26, 2025.
Irma stated that the workshop was a collaboration between the Southeast Asian Ministers of Education Organization - Technical and Vocational Education and Training (SEAMEO TED) and Cheju Halla University.
The aim was to strengthen the capacity of educators in the ASEAN region's technical and vocational education and training (TVET) sector in facing the era of digital transformation and artificial intelligence (AI).
“We gained deeper insights into how AI and digital transformation can be integrated into vocational education systems,” said Irma on Friday (2/5/2025).
Over the course of four days, participants explored various aspects of AI and digital transformation in education through a series of comprehensive activities.

Activities included presentations by international experts, group discussions, hands-on development of AI and digital-based learning prototypes, and visits to AI laboratories at Cheju Halla University.
According to Irma, the workshop was vital in providing a solid foundational understanding of AI and digital transformation in the context of education. Each participant also produced digital and AI-based learning prototypes relevant to their own field of expertise.
“Participants also had the opportunity to collaborate across countries in developing innovative learning models that integrate AI technology, while also building strong networks among ASEAN TVET educators,” she added.
Irma hoped that strategic recommendations for developing adaptive curricula that respond to AI and digital transformation, both at the national and ASEAN regional levels, can soon be formulated. These recommendations could serve as guidelines for education policymakers in ASEAN in crafting tech-responsive education strategies.
“The knowledge I gained from this workshop will be implemented in transforming the teaching and learning activities at PTI UMS. In addition, the networks I built with fellow ASEAN TVET educators open up future opportunities for research collaboration and the development of technology-based learning,” Irma added.
Efforts to enhance the quality of technology-based learning in educational institutions across ASEAN, including at UMS, must continue to be encouraged. The networks formed during the workshop are also expected to evolve into joint research initiatives, faculty exchange programs, and other future capacity-building projects.
