Hundreds of ISS 2024 Foreign Students Enjoy the Batik Experience in Laweyan

Held in the Universitas Muhammadiyah Surakarta (UMS), the ISS 2024 participants visited Kampung Batik Laweyan on Tuesday (15/10/2024). with the goal of learning about and promoting batik, the iconic fabric of Solo. 

Hundreds of international students in attendance were encouraged to deepen their understanding of the unique qualities of Solo’s signature batik. To achieve this, participants were invited to experience the batik-making process firsthand.

“It was a bit challenging because I’m not used to art, but I tried my best,” said Awabin Samsudi, one of the ISS participants.

Awabin, a student from Thailand, is currently pursuing his master’s degree at Universitas Gadjah Mada. Having previously completed his undergraduate studies in Jember, he speaks Indonesian fluently. Despite feeling slightly rushed, he thoroughly enjoyed the batik-making activity.

“This will be an amazing and unforgettable experience,” he added.

Awabin expressed his admiration for the beautiful batik patterns, particularly those featuring Al-Quran verses, which he found especially appealing to tourists. He also appreciated the cool and calming atmosphere of Laweyan.
