The Library and Digital Service Center of Universitas Muhammadiyah Surakarta (UMS), in collaboration with the Central Statistics Agency (BPS) of Sukoharjo Regency, organized a public lecture, the inauguration of statistical agents, and the launch of the Statistics Corner. The event took place at the Siti Badilah Room of the UMS Library and Digital Service Center.

The Head of UMS Library, Maria Husnun Nisa, S.Sos., M.A., extended a warm welcome to Ir. Endang Wahyuningsih, M.M., Head of BPS Central Java Province, along with her team; Nurul Choiriyati, S.T., M.M., Head of BPS Sukoharjo Regency, along with her team, as well as representatives of statistical agents, students, and other invited guests.

“The presence of the Statistics Corner is expected to improve literacy, serve as a place providing research data, and be utilized optimally. Activities in the Statistics Corner will later be supported by statistical agents consisting of selected UMS students, who will also be inaugurated today,” she explained on Saturday (7/12/2024).

Husnun expressed hope that the Statistics Corner would serve as a platform for statistical education within the university environment. This aligns with the Statistics Corner's tagline, “Statistics Corner: Fun Place, Fun Learning.”

Meanwhile, the inauguration of statistical agents was conducted symbolically through the wearing of sashes and the reading of an oath.

During the public lecture, Ir. Endang Tri Wahyuningsih, M.M., delivered material on the theme “Statistics for Everyone: Realizing Data Literacy for the Young Generation.”

“Data is not interesting if only viewed but must be processed and analyzed. Data literacy includes the ability to read, understand, interpret, and use data in various contexts,” she explained.

Endang also shared that statistical data can be accessed online through websites such as pst.bps.go.id, jateng.bps.go.id, or sukoharjo.kab.bps.go.id.

“Tech-savvy young generations must also be data-literate. The Statistics Corner, a result of the collaboration between BPS Sukoharjo Regency and UMS, aims to enhance statistical literacy through various available features, such as an infographic gallery, video graphics gallery, literacy space, and statistical education,” she emphasized.

The event continued with the inauguration of the Statistics Corner, located on the first floor of the KKI room in the UMS Library and Digital Service Center, on Wednesday (4/11/2024). The inauguration was marked by a ribbon-cutting ceremony performed by the Head of BPS Central Java Province, accompanied by the Head of BPS Sukoharjo Regency and the Head of the UMS Library.

Additionally, there was a demonstration of the BPS website and methods for searching statistical information, presented by the statistical agents.
