Hizbul Wathan, of Universitas Muhammadiyah Surakarta (UMS), organized a Beach Clean Up event at Watu Bolong Beach in Tanjungsari, Gunung Kidul, on Saturday (27/1/2024).
The Kafilah Board, Ayunda Haniva Amira, mentioned that Hizbul Wathan collaborated with the local community to facilitate this activity. The initiative garnered a positive response due to its constructive and beneficial nature. Furthermore, Haniva encouraged Hizbul Wathan UMS to actively participate in conservation activities.
“Seeing the damage to nature, it is only natural for the youth to step up and take responsibility for the environment. Presently, Hizbul Wathan UMS, functioning as a scouting organization at the youth level, particularly among students, aspires to nurture leaders who champion environmental conservation,” expressed the UMS Psychology Student.

Before the cleanup began, Hanifah Kusuma, the field coordinator, also explained the technicalities of the beach cleanup.
Hanifah explained, “The cleanup involves sorting garbage into various types, focusing on prioritizing non-organic waste. We aim to ensure that not all the collected waste is transported to landfills. Organic waste, such as wood and branches, can be repurposed for making bonfires at night.”
Similarly, Kilau Aurum, the Head of the UMS Hizbul Wathan Kafilah, expressed the hope that Hizbul Wathan’s future activities and agendas will benefit others.
Kilau conveyed, “It benefits individuals, organizations, associations, the environment, and society. Under the banner of Hizbul Wathan, we advocate for the youth’s role as leaders in defending the environment.”
The Beach Clean Up took place from 15:30 to 18:00 WIB, encompassing the cleaning of the shoreline area, the coral cliff zone, and the tourist camp area.
41 attendees, including residents from Watu Bolong Beach, attended this event. It also serves as one in a series of activities commemorating the 14th anniversary of Hizbul Wathan UMS.
