Three student teams from Universitas Muhammadiyah Surakarta (UMS) won three awards at the World Young Inventions Exhibition (WYIE), held in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, on May 18, 2024. They brought home two gold medals and one silver medal after competing against 700 participants from 15 countries.

First team with Morintabs
The first team to win a gold medal was from the Faculty of Pharmacy at UMS, consisting of Zakiyatul Fadhilah, Ahmad Farras Musayyaf, and Rizka Nur Annisa. They presented an innovation in the Biotechnology and Health category, focusing on Alzheimer’s disease, a brain disorder that causes memory loss, reduced cognitive and speech abilities, and behavioral changes. Their innovation was a medication developed from fruit extract compounds.
“Our team tried to formulate a pharmaceutical preparation in the form of an effervescent tablet made from noni fruit extract,” said Farras on Monday (20/5).
The pharmacy student explained that the tablet developed by their team is called Morintabs, designed in a form that dissolves easily when it comes into contact with water. The target compounds in the noni fruit extract, Scopoletin, Quercetin, and Rutin, function as inhibitors that suppress the production of the enzyme acetylcholinesterase.
“If the level of acetylcholinesterase is too high, it will eventually affect the number of neurons in the brain,” Farras added.

Second team with apps Go-Stunting
The second team, which also won a gold medal, consisted of students from the Nursing, Professional Nurse, and Informatics Engineering department at UMS. In addition to the gold medal, they also received the Hongkong Special Gold Award from the Hongkong Yan Chai Steam Faire.
These outstanding students were Ira Ayu Ananda, Wahyu Aditya Alfath, Aisyah Dani Hanifah, Atho Robban Azmi, and Resza Rigian Adi Pratama. They developed an application called Go-Stunting (Get Out Stunting with Mental Health Prevention), which was entered in the Information and Communication Technology, Multimedia category.
“This app was created to help prevent stunting and support mental health. It includes features for screening, educational content, registration for counseling, consultation with nutritionists and mental health professionals, and even reminder notifications,” explained Atho.

Third team with product SunSpila
The final team, which won a silver medal, consisted of students from the Industrial Engineering, Accounting, and Pharmacy department. They were Adin Nur Rohman, Arief Surya Adhi, Pramesti Vanisa Nurnazwa, Berlian Putri Nur Winda, and Mira Shofiah. The product they developed is called SunSpila, a spray-on sunscreen made from spirulina and lavender extract, categorized under Household, Office, and Personal Care.
“Our innovative sunscreen has competitive advantages not found in existing market products. It can protect the skin from harmful UV rays, prevent premature aging (anti-aging), and shield the skin from mosquito bites. In addition to its unique design and compact 60ml size, SunSpila also features nano spray technology and has an SPF (Sun Protection Factor) of 20,” explained Pramesti.
Head of Reasoning, Creativity, and Soft Skills at the UMS Office of Student Affairs, Muhammad Al Fatih Hendrawan, S.T., M.T., stated that UMS strongly encourages students to participate in various competitions, both national and international.
“We are grateful that since the beginning of the year, many students have been actively participating, especially in international competitions, though national-level ones are also being pursued,” he said.
Fatih added that in 2024, the achievement target was increased from 30 to 35 accomplishments. As of mid-year, UMS has already reached between 20 and 25 achievements.
