UMS MHES Strengthens Research Toward OIC-Level Standards

The Master of Islamic Economic Law (MHES) Program at Universitas Muhammadiyah Surakarta (UMS) once again organized the International Student Research Dissemination and a guest lecture titled “Mudharabah Contracts in Islamic Insurance from the Perspective of Islamic Jurisprudence and Positive Law: A Jurisprudential Review, The Legality of Including Zakat in the List of Economic Factors in Bandung Regency.”

Held at the UMS Postgraduate Building, the event is part of MHES’s ongoing efforts to enhance the quality of students’ publications at the international level. It also featured Syekh Dr. Ahmad Abdul Hadi, Lc., M.A., a fatwa writer for Hai’ah Kibar al-Ulama Saudi Arabia and visiting lecturer who assisted in reviewing students’ research.

The Head of the Master of HES Program, Dr. Isman, S.H.I., S.H., M.H., explained that this research connects UMS’s fiqh concepts with standards applied in countries that are members of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC). The OIC is an intergovernmental organization and the collective voice of the Muslim world, tasked with safeguarding and protecting their economic, social, and political interests.

“Essentially, fiqh contributes to the welfare and prosperity of society,” Isman explained when interviewed on Wednesday (12/11/2025).

Isman noted that there were two presenters who delivered their research findings. The first, Muhammad Zacky Yudhatama, Lc., M.H., discussed zakat and its role in preventing divorce. Meanwhile, the second presenter, Ghufran Jauhar, S.IP., S.H., M.H., focused on insurance within fiqh-based transactions, emphasizing its element of helping others rather than merely its commercial aspect.

Furthermore, Isman explained that the presenters were selected through a rigorous process conducted by the program. “First, we evaluate the thesis research to ensure that it is truly worthy to be proposed, disseminated, and reviewed by international reviewers,” he said.

MHES UMS has recorded numerous achievements in advancing international publications. Currently, the  MHES program ranks first in SINTA publications, and at the international level it stands among the top three in Indonesia.

“Among the reputable ones, there are around two articles, but including SINTA and others, I think there are already more than thirty. This is because publication is a requirement for the thesis examination in MHES,” Isman explained.

In addition, MHES continues to strengthen efforts to improve both the quality and quantity of international publications by implementing a dissemination strategy involving reviewers from overseas universities with strong research capacity and international standards.

“We will intensify monthly dissemination activities and invite reviewers from Malaysia, from the Islamic Science University of Malaysia (USIM), and other international partner institutions that collaborate with UMS,” he elaborated.

The program fully supports students in producing international research by providing assistance, incentives, and opportunities to join international seminars. Isman hopes that the development of Islamic economics studies at UMS can be approached in an interdisciplinary manner.

“It includes law, economics, management, philanthropy. So if we want to take this topic further, the approach must also be interdisciplinary,” he hoped.

Through an interdisciplinary approach, support comes from various faculties such as economics, law, and the Faculty of Islamic Studies. “Ideally, a roadmap should be created and facilitated by the Institute for Research and Innovation (LRI),” Isman concluded.
