Internationalization must be a shared responsibility of the entire academic community at Universitas Muhammadiyah Surakarta (UMS). This underscores the importance of synergy between faculties and study programs.

UMS Vice Rector V for Collaboration & International Affairs, Prof. Supriyono, S.T., M.T., Ph.D., explained that involving faculties and departments can significantly broaden the scope of partnerships, whether in academic mobility or research collaboration.

“The synergy has an excellent impact on both UMS students and lecturers,” said Supriyono at the Siti Walidah Main Building, UMS, on Monday (21/4/2025).

One of the strategies UMS has pursued, he added, is organizing the workshop titled “Capacity Building Workshop for Internationalization: Dream Big, Think Global, Act Now.”

According to the Vice Rector V of UMS, the workshop was intended to broaden the perspective of each study program, encouraging them to take an active role in facilitating student and faculty mobility abroad.

“Once mobility programs are well-established, the next challenge is to strengthen UMS research capacity,” he continued.

UMS previously engaged in an international partnership with a U.S.-based institution. Supriyono recalled that in 2009, UMS collaborated with the University of Minnesota, but the initiative stalled due to distance and financial constraints.

The recent collaboration with Education USA marks an important step toward reviving academic exchanges with American scholars. Education USA is an agency under the U.S. Department of State tasked with promoting higher education in the United States.

"We hope that cooperation with the U.S. will continue to grow. Perhaps student exchange programs between the U.S. and Indonesia can be established, which in turn could create partnerships with more American universities," he concluded.
