The Research and Innovation Office (LRI) of Universitas Muhammadiyah Surakarta (UMS), in collaboration with the Communication Forum (Forkom) of Research and Community Service Institutes (LPPM) in Central Java, held an event titled “Dissemination and Assistance on Intellectual Property: Protection and Safeguarding of Intellectual Property” on Monday, (19/5/2025) at the OSCE Room, Faculty of Pharmacy, UMS.

The event was attended by lecturers and students from various faculties at UMS. Its purpose was to raise awareness about the potential of intellectual property (IP) arising from research outputs by lecturers and students.

The speakers at the dissemination event included Prof. Kun Harismah, Ph.D., Head of Innovation at the UMS Research and Innovation Office, and Dr. Tri Junianto, S.H., M.H., a Junior Expert Analyst on Intellectual Property from the Ministry of Law (Kemenkum) for the Central Java region.

In his opening remarks, Head of the Central Java Regional Office of the Ministry of Law, Heni Susila Wardoyo, S.H., M.H., stated that intellectual property is not only a highly valuable asset, but also a key pillar in supporting innovation, creating economic opportunities, and advancing science and technology.

The current era of globalization makes intellectual property protection more crucial than ever. “Without adequate protection, innovations and creative works can easily be plagiarized by irresponsible parties,” said Heni.

Heni believed that collaboration between higher education institutions and regional offices of the Ministry of Law will help advance the intellectual property ethos in Indonesia. This collaboration is already part of the agenda and performance targets of the Indonesian Ministry of Law.

Representing the Rector of UMS, Vice Rector IV Prof. Dr. Dr. Em Sutrisna, M.Kes., stated that issues related to research, publication, and intellectual property rights (IPR) have often become obstacles for lecturers in academic promotion.

“IPR is often placed second by lecturers, as the requirement for becoming a professor is publication in reputable international journals. IPR is not yet a requirement,” Em said.

According to Em, IPR is very important for research under schemes such as productive innovative research, fundamental research, and applied research under the Directorate of Research, Technology, and Community Service (DRTPM) of the Ministry of Higher Education, Research, Science, and Technology.

Em emphasized the need for UMS lecturers to be more aware of the importance of IPR, as many research projects conducted at UMS often result in applied works. “The outcome should ideally be a product or design. And those products should be registered as IPR,” he asserted.

Despite its importance, the Vice Rector acknowledged that the IPR registration process takes a considerable amount of time. In addition, IPRs must be renewed periodically, which has led some lecturers to put the process aside.

Em expressed hope that UMS would continue to collaborate with the Ministry of Law to provide assistance for IPR submissions. “Patent contributions hold a significant weight in university rankings. They are highly strategic, not just publications in reputable journals,” he concluded.
