UMS Achieves Global Recognition in Education

The education field at Universitas Muhammadiyah Surakarta (UMS) has received recognition in the Times Higher Education World University Ranking (THE WUR) 2025 by Subject, which was released on Wednesday (22/1/2025). THE WUR 2025 by Subject placed UMS' education subject in the 601+ world ranking, with an overall score of 14.4 - 27.

There are five assessment indicators in THE WUR 2025 by Subject for the education field: teaching, research environment, research quality, industry, and international outlook. In the official release, UMS excelled in two indicators: international outlook with a score of 46.9 and research quality with a score of 42.8.

Vice-Rector V for Collaboration and International Affairs at UMS, Prof. Supriyono, S.T., M.T., Ph.D., stated that UMS’ debut in THE WUR 2025 by Subject deserves appreciation.

According to him, this achievement further strengthens UMS' recognition on the global stage. “We started with THE World University Ranking, then THE Impact Ranking, and this year, we have entered THE WUR by Subject,” he said on Thursday (23/1/2025).

Supriyono added that research quality at UMS is one of the key indicators in THE WUR 2025 by Subject ranking. This is reflected in the field-weighted citation impact (FWCI) score of UMS researchers.

“Moreover, UMS originated from IKIP (Institute of Teacher Training and Education), so FKIP UMS has deep roots, especially in producing high-quality research,” Supriyono added.

Besides research quality, UMS also received recognition as the top university in Indonesia for the international outlook indicator. UMS academics have established partnerships with researchers and global universities from various continents, including Asia, Europe, Australia, and Africa. The highest number of collaborations comes from Malaysia, with a total of 44 papers and 18 partner universities.

Supriyono also highlighted the collaboration between FKIP UMS and the Southeast Asia Teachers (SEA Teachers) program. This program was initiated by the Southeast Asian Ministers of Education Organization (SEAMEO).

This collaboration allows FKIP UMS to delegate its students to participate in the SEA Teachers program in several Southeast Asian countries. The goal is to provide students with cross-country teaching experience.

In November 2024, FKIP UMS hosted the SEA Teachers program by welcoming 10 students from the University of Northern Philippines (UNP). “We must maintain this initiative while continuing to encourage other countries besides the Philippines to come to UMS,” he explained.

Looking ahead, he stated that UMS will continue to strive to maintain and enhance its global reputation. “We need to further study the ranking indicators and work on improving the specific indicators we aim to achieve,” said the Vice-Rector V of UMS.
