Universitas Muhammadiyah Surakarta (UMS) has once again strengthened its position as the best Islamic university in Indonesia. This achievement is evidenced by the results of the Times Higher Education (THE) World University Rankings (THE WUR) 2026.

With an overall score of 27.3–32.0, UMS is ranked 1201–1500 in the world, earning the title of the top Islamic university in Indonesia. UMS also stands among the best private universities in the country, alongside Binus University.

UMS Vice Rector V, Prof. Supriyono, Ph.D., explained, this score places UMS among the top three universities in Indonesia, alongside several leading public universities such as Universitas Gadjah Mada, Institut Teknologi Bandung, and Universitas Airlangga.

“This year, UMS maintains its position in THE WUR. Globally, we remain in the 1200+ bracket, and among private universities in Indonesia, we are still the best,” said Supriyono on Friday (10/10/2025)

The five indicators used in THE WUR are Teaching, Research Environment, Research Quality, Industry, and International Outlook. UMS once again excelled in Research Quality, scoring 60.5, making it the university with the highest research quality in Indonesia.

“Our research quality score is far above the national average,” emphasized Supriyono.

He further explained that this success stems from a deliberate strategy, as impactful research cannot be achieved instantly.

“This achievement is driven by UMS researchers who have long focused on specific fields of study, resulting in a significant number of citations,” explained the UMS Vice Rector V.

The excellence of UMS research quality, he continued, is the result of a long-term, well-planned journey. According to the university’s strategic plan, researchers at UMS are encouraged to publish in journals with strong citation impact.

Supriyono noted that there is still room for improvement, particularly in the quality of teaching. He highlighted the importance of maintaining an ideal student-to-faculty ratio.

For the research environment, Supriyono emphasized that UMS is focusing on developing and expanding research centers to create a stronger and more supportive research ecosystem.

To develop a strong research ecosystem, Supriyono said that adequate funding support for UMS research centers is essential to build their capacity and develop sustainable models. “We need to formulate strategies that will allow these funding sources to become self-sustaining,” he added.

Despite UMS strong performance in research, Supriyono believed there is still much potential for growth.

“There are still many indicators we can continue to improve. Our goal moving forward is to elevate UMS position even higher on the global stage,” he concluded.
