Harun emphasized that research quality is a vital pillar in UMS academic development.
“We prioritize top-tier research and strive to increase the diversity of international research partnerships,” he stated on Saturday (2/11/2024).
This commitment is evidenced by the results of the Times Higher Education (THE) World University Ranking (WUR) 2025. UMS achieved a score of 58.2 in the research quality indicator, making it the highest-ranked university in Indonesia for research quality.

Harun added that UMS continues to forge numerous partnerships, including collaborations with various international universities, such as in Brunei Darussalam, which need to be maintained and further developed.
“It’s essential to involve lecturers, students, and staff in research projects so that the impact of the research can be broader,” he added.
The UMS Vice Rector I explained that the success indicators for collaboration, which measure the quality of research produced, include the number of citations and publications. One of the strategic steps taken by UMS is to increase research funding, targeting Rp40 billion this year.
“We recently received Rp3.5 billion in research funding from LPDP for collaborations involving multiple universities,” he continued.
He also highlighted the importance of publication and citations in enhancing academic reputation, explaining that a paper needs to be widely published and cited to make a significant impact.
Harun hopes this strategy will help UMS gain more international recognition and contribute to improving community welfare. UMS is determined to continue as a driving force in the advancement of science and technology, bringing positive impacts to both local and global communities.
“Knowledge without application is like a tree without fruit. We are committed to ensuring that our research findings can benefit the wider society,” he concluded.
