Performing taraweeh during the holy month of Ramadan brings immense rewards for every Muslim. In addition to being a recommended Sunnah act, Taraweeh is one of the most significant forms of night worship with great merits.
In Islam, taraweeh is believed to provide inner peace to those who perform it sincerely and with devotion. Therefore, let us use the Ramadan 2025 as a spiritual reflection period, strengthening our acts of worship including performing Taraweeh.
The Reward of Taraweeh is Like Worshiping All Night
The virtues of taraweeh during Ramadan are enormous, as it is a highly recommended Sunnah act for every Muslim. This prayer offers a great opportunity to erase past sins. The Prophet Muhammad SAW once said:
مَنْ قَامَ رَمَضَانَ إِيمَانًا وَاحْتِسَابًا غُفِرَ لَهُ مَا تَقَدَّمَ مِنْ ذَنْبِهِ
“Whoever performs qiyam during Ramadan with faith and seeking reward from Allah, their past sins will be forgiven." (Hadith Narrated by Bukhari No. 37 and Muslim No. 759)
The virtue of taraweeh increases significantly when performed in jamaah (in group). This point was emphasized by Muhamad Subhi Apriantoro, Lc., M.H., a lecturer at the Faculty of Islamic Studies, Universitas Muhammadiyah Surakarta (UMS).
Subhi explained that every Muslim is encouraged to perform taraweeh in jamaah and continue until the imam finishes the prayer. In a relatively short time, Allah grants the reward of worshiping the entire night. As Rasulullah SAW said:
مَنْ قَامَ مَعَ الْإِمَامِ حَتَّى يَنْصَرِفَ كُتِبَ لَهُ قِيَامُ لَيْلَةٍ
“Whoever prays with the imam until the imam finishes, it will be recorded for them as if they prayed the entire night.” (Hadith Narrated by Tirmidhi No. 806)
“Additionally, performing taraweeh strengthens a servant’s spiritual connection with Allah SWT,” Subhi added during an online interview on Thursday, February (27/2/2025).

Prayer after Taraweeh
The prayer after taraweeh is also an important part of Ramadan night worship. According to Subhi, the supplication can be taken from authentic hadiths or personal prayers according to one’s own needs.
“There is no specific prayer that is obligatory after taraweeh. What matters is that the prayer is good,” Subhi explained.
Rasulullah often recited a prayer that broadly seeks Allah’s forgiveness. One of the prayer he taught is:
اللَّهُمَّ اغْفِرْ لِي مَا قَدَّمْتُ وَمَا أَخَّرْتُ وَمَا أَسْرَرْتُ وَمَا أَعْلَنْتُ وَمَا أَسْرَفْتُ وَمَا أَنْتَ أَعْلَمُ بِهِ مِنِّي
O Allah, forgive my past and future sins, those I have hidden and those I have made public, those in which I have exceeded limits, and those You know better than me. (Hadith Narrated by Muslim No. 771)
Subhi explained that this prayer covers the forgiveness of all sins, past and future, intentional and unintentional. “This is a very comprehensive prayer. Rasulullah often recited it in his night prayers,” he said.
Aside from this, Muslims are also encouraged to recite other prayers with deep meaning that encompass various requests for goodness. One well-known and concise yet powerful supplication is the Doa Sapu Jagat (All in One), which many are already familiar with.
رَبَّنَا آتِنَا فِي الدُّنْيَا حَسَنَةً وَفِي الْآخِرَةِ حَسَنَةً وَقِنَا عَذَابَ النَّارِ
Our Lord! Grant us the good of this world and the Hereafter, and protect us from the torment of the Fire. (Qur’an Surah Al-Baqarah: 201)
“If we seek blessings in our lives, both in this world and the Hereafter, the Doa Sapu Jagat can be one of the prayers we recite. Rasulullah also frequently recited it on various occasions,” Subhi explained.
Essentially, the prayer after taraweeh can be a personal prayer tailored to one's needs and desires. It serves as an additional opportunity to present one’s requests to Allah, complementing the prayer made after the salat.
“One of the most favorable times for prayer after salat, so pour out your hopes and requests with sincerity. Allah is the All-Hearing,” he concluded.
