Bottom Financial Admission Target
Universitas Muhammadiyah Surakarta (UMS) is committed to increasing access to higher education for students from the lowest income brackets in Indonesia. As part of our inclusive admissions strategy, we set specific targets to admit students from the bottom 20% of household income. Through dedicated scholarship programs, UMS ensures that financial limitations do not hinder talented students from pursuing their academic aspirations.
Bottom Financial Student Success
Universitas Muhammadiyah Surakarta (UMS) is committed to supporting students from low-income families to ensure successful completion of their studies. While we do not have a specific graduation/completion target for students in the bottom 20% of household income, UMS offers financial flexibility, such as allowing students to request a deferral of tuition payments upon submission of proof of their parents’ income. This policy helps reduce financial barriers and supports students to stay on track for graduation.
Low Income Student Support
Universitas Muhammadiyah Surakarta (UMS) provides comprehensive support for students from low-income families to help them successfully complete their studies. This includes financial assistance for essential needs such as textbooks, legal services, and other academic-related costs. UMS is committed to empowering economically disadvantaged students by ensuring they have the resources necessary for their academic success, minimizing financial barriers to education.
Low-Income Student Support Program
Universitas Muhammadiyah Surakarta (UMS) provides dedicated academic advisors to support all students, including those from the bottom 20% of household income groups. These advisors work closely with students to ensure they have the resources and guidance they need to successfully complete their studies. UMS is committed to supporting students from economically disadvantaged backgrounds, offering tailored support to help them overcome academic challenges and achieve their educational goals.
Low or Lower-middle Income Countries Student Support
Universitas Muhammadiyah Surakarta (UMS) offers a fully funded scholarship scheme specifically for international students from low-income countries. The scholarship is designed to support students from low-middle income backgrounds, providing financial assistance to access higher education. UMS is committed to improving educational opportunities for students from underprivileged areas through targeted support.
Community Anti-poverty Programmes
Universitas Muhammadiyah Surakarta (UMS) organized the Wirausaha Merdeka (WMK) Expo on 7–8 December 2024, involving 520 participants from various universities in the Soloraya region. The program provided mentoring, practical workshops, and prototype development guidance by professional facilitators, enabling participants to start innovative and socially sustainable businesses. The event served as a collaborative learning platform connecting students, the university, and external entrepreneurship associations to support local start-up growth through education and resource sharing.

Policy Making
Universitas Muhammadiyah Surakarta (UMS) continues to play an active role in supporting poverty reduction through research-based community empowerment programmes. In 2024, a multidisciplinary team of UMS academics—Dr. Ir. Muchlison Anis, S.T., M.T. (Industrial Engineering), Luluk Ria Rakhma, S.Gz., M.Gizi (Nutrition), and Kussudyarsana, S.E., M.Si., Ph.D. (Management)—implemented a community service initiative in Cabeyan Village, funded by the Directorate General of Research, Technology, and Community Service (DRTPM), Ministry of Education, Culture, Research, and Technology. The programme focused on developing the village’s agricultural potential into sustainable economic activities, supporting the creation of local livelihoods and contributing to poverty alleviation at the community level.
