A total of 101 research proposals from Universitas Muhammadiyah Surakarta (UMS) lecturers have secured funding from the Ministry of Higher Education, Science, and Technology for the 2026 fiscal year.
This achievement comprises 80 proposals under the Directorate of Research and Community Service (DPPM) scheme and 21 proposals under the Directorate of Commercialization and Partnership (DHK) scheme.
This accomplishment places UMS in first position among Muhammadiyah and Aisyiyah Higher Education Institutions (PTMA). Nationally, this figure also solidifies UMS's position as one of the universities with competitive and progressive research performance.
Rois Fatoni, S.T., M.Sc., Ph.D., Deputy for Research, Innovation, and Intellectual Property Center at UMS, emphasized that this achievement reflects the direction of research development toward greater impact.
"Looking at the composition, 80 percent is in basic research and 20 percent has already entered commercialization. This shows that UMS's research contributions are being directed to provide leverage for industrial development," he said on Sunday (12/4/2026).
He explained that the research scheme distribution at UMS follows the Technology Readiness Level (TRL). Basic research at levels 1–5 is facilitated through DPPM, while commercialization research at levels 6–9 is managed through DHK.
In this context, 80 proposals fall under basic research categories such as novice lecturer research, fundamental research, and applied research. Meanwhile, 21 proposals are at the commercialization stage, ready for implementation with industry partners.
The achievement in the commercialization scheme is considered strategic because it has higher standards, ranging from patent ownership to industry partner involvement. This demonstrates the readiness of UMS lecturers to bridge academic research outcomes toward real-world application in business and industry.
Rois emphasized that current national policy direction encourages impactful research that does not stop at publication alone. He noted that this transformation has begun to be implemented at UMS through strengthening the research ecosystem based on industry and community needs.
This success, he said, reflects the effectiveness of internal faculty development at UMS. The emergence of young researchers in basic research schemes serves as an indicator of regeneration and capacity building in human resources for research.
"Externally, this proves that UMS research is aligned with the ministry's vision emphasizing impactful research. Internally, this also shows that our research human resource development is progressing well," he stressed.
Rois affirmed that UMS is committed to continuously strengthening the research ecosystem oriented toward real solutions and industry needs, while increasing academic contributions to national development based on research and innovation.
