Recently, the ranking institution Webometrics released a list of the best universities in Indonesia. According to its official website on Wednesday (5/2/2025), Universitas Muhammadiyah Surakarta (UMS) has been named the best private university in Central Java and has also made it into the top 10 best private universities in Indonesia.
On the global stage, UMS secured the 2,394th position out of 31,000 universities included in the Webometrics ranking.
Webometrics is one of the largest independent ranking institutions in the world. The institution assesses universities based on several indicators, namely visibility, which evaluates the impact of university website content, transparency regarding the most cited researchers, and excellence in highly cited research articles.
The top 10 private universities in Indonesia according to Webometrics are as follows
- Telkom University (Tel-U): ranked 1,163
- Universitas Bina Nusantara: ranked 1,369
- Universitas Muhammadiyah Malang: ranked 1,765
- Universitas Muhammadiyah Yogyakarta: ranked 1,822
- Universitas Medan Area: ranked 2,151
- Universitas Muhammadiyah Surakarta: ranked 2,394
- Universitas Pelita Harapan: ranked 2,653
- Universitas Kristen Satya Wacana: ranked 2,831
- Universitas Parahyangan Catholic: ranked 3,074
- Universitas Gunadarma: ranked 3,078
The Head of the Public Relations and Ranking Bureau at UMS, Gunawan Ariyanto, S.T., M.Comp.Sc, Ph.D., expressed gratitude for UMS’ achievement in the Webometrics ranking.
“Alhamdulillah, UMS' ranking in Webometrics has grown organically,” said Gunawan on Wednesday.
According to him, the visibility indicator assessment is based on data from the Majestic platform, which maps websites worldwide. This indicator measures the number of external links directed to ums.ac.id. These links typically come from other websites containing content related to UMS.
In terms of research, Webometrics evaluates scientific publication articles indexed in Scopus. The ranking institution also assesses the number of citations received by UMS researchers.
The UMS Informatics Engineering lecturer noted that the success in citations cannot be separated from the role of the university library and the journals published by UMS.
“UMS Library plays a significant role, especially in its repository. Many UMS research works are cited by other researchers through the repository,” he added.
Gunawan hopes that UMS can further enhance its content visibility and the dissemination of research produced by its researchers. He emphasized the importance of organic growth.
Furthermore, Gunawan urged the UMS academic community to continuously improve the quality of Scopus-indexed research.
“The quality of research should never decline. The minimum standard must continue to rise. Scientific publications in the UMS Library and UMS journals must also continue,” he concluded.
